These are all good points. I'll also add that the "home as an investment" mindset is particularly worrying when we realize that many people plan to use the capital gains from their homes to fund their retirement. Thus, lowering home prices could endanger retirement plans.
I don't see a the primary residence as an investment; I see it as consumption.
